A pastor from Highlands Ranch survived the deadly tornado that struck Joplin, Mo., by huddling with his family members in an apartment.
Todd Nelson, a pastor at Mountainview Community Church, was attending his daughter’s graduation from Ozark Christian College when the twister demolished the rural town, according to friends of the Nelson family.
In a message sent to Mountainview members, the church said the apartment was destroyed and that the family “literally had to climb out of rubble.” The family’s two cars were flipped over. There were some injuries to the family members, although specific details were not immediately available. Nelson’s pregnant daughter experienced contractions during the storm, but is reportedly doing well.
Nelson, also a musical director at the church at South Broadway and Highlands Ranch Parkway, was scheduled to return home last week. He was not available for comment.
The death toll from the Joplin tornado stands at 125 and several people are still missing. Some residents have already started rebuilding their homes.
