Rains damage trails in Highlands Ranch

Saturday skate competition up in the air

As heavy rains pounded Colorado over the last two days, Highlands Ranch has found itself to be in pretty good shape.

The community didn’t escape without some setbacks, however, as the bowls at Redstone Skate Park filled with water overnight Sept. 12, making Saturday’s Ruler of the Railzz Skate Competition a question mark.

According to Highlands Ranch Metro District spokeswoman Sherry Eppers a decision on whether to go ahead with Saturday’s competition will be made at 7 a.m. Sept. 14. Information will be posted at www.highlandsranch.org as well as on the Metro District’s Facebook page once that decision is made. The event is tentatively scheduled for noon, Sept. 14.

Trail damage was also reported by the Metro District in the northeast section of Cheese Ranch Historic and Natural Area, as well as on other soft-surface trails throughout Highlands Ranch.

“There was enough water velocity to cause a lot of erosion underneath a trail crossing (at Cheese Ranch), making it unsafe for people to cross it,” said Metro District community relations specialist Kari Larese. “That trail has been barricaded off to keep pedestrians from using this portion of the trail.”

According to Larese, once the rains subside next week, metro district staff will clean up debris and re-grade soft-surface trails in need of repair.

The Metro District trails aren’t the only trails that have been hit, and Highlands Ranch Backcountry Wilderness Area supervisor Mark Giebel is urging people to stay off the backcountry trails over the course of the weekend.

“They are going to need some time to dry out,” Giebel said. “We will plan on getting out there Monday afternoon and assessing everything.”

Giebel did say, however, that the flooding in the creeks was worse from the storm two weeks ago, as a higher amount of moisture came down in a more concentrated area in a shorter amount of time, resulting in more significant flash flooding.
