The 40 West Art District’s largest annual event, MuralFest, is back on Aug. 12 to add even more color to Lakewood’s famous avenue.
“We’re so excited about the momentum happening on West Colfax, and we dreamed up an event that would draw people from all over to the district,” said Bill Marino, chair of 40 West. “It’s a way to showcase West Colfax as and arts and cultural destination for the entire metro area.”
This year’s MuralFest is the third — and finds the event growing in new directions on exciting ways, with more music, vendors and creativity.
“People like the idea of live music and art together,” said Cindy Baroway, chair of the MuralFest committee. “This is one of the biggest accomplishments to come from the Colfax 2040 Plan for the revitalization of the corridor.”
Here’s what’s new, what’s familiar and the details for the annual event:
The most exciting feature of the event is the BrewHop Trolley, which is on loan from Fort Collins, and will take riders on a 20-minute tour of the area.
“The trolley will take riders to some of the murals that have been created in previous years,” Baroway said. “It’s also an opportunity to teach people about some of the history of West Colfax.”
There will be more vendors, ranging from artistic ones like CSquaredStudios, food trucks like Steady Smoking BBQ, and fashion trucks like LuLaRoe.
“We’re also going to have interactive and small-scale murals being created in front of people’s eyes,” said Liz Black, 40 West’s executive director. “We want to increase engagement for the district and the corridor, and to do that we’re celebrating art in all its forms.”
Another new aspect of this year’s festival is the three bands that will be performing — Jolly Green Love Machine, Legitimate by Friday and Land Lines.
As befits the name, this year’s event will see the creation of two new murals — one by Dan Toro, which has been purchased by the Container Collective Yoga and Bikes, and another by Bobby MaGee Lopez, who will be doing the larger mural on the vacant building to the southeast of Casa Bonita.
WestFax Brewing will be providing the beer, and there will be a bevy of activities for children, like face painting, stencils and graffiti.
Most importantly, the event is a way to support local creative businesses.
“Everybody who is here is a local company that is in our community,” Black said. “It’s all about supporting the work they do.”
