Q&A: What is the South Metro Denver Realtor Association?

Group has new home in Centennial after move from Littleton


When a local real estate organization chose its new home, it was — of course — all about location.

“Being in Centennial makes things easier for many of our Realtor members when they are out doing business and need to meet with clients in (the) central area,” said Heather Hankins, chair of the board of directors for the South Metro Denver Realtor Association.

The association held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Oct. 11 to celebrate its new headquarters near East Arapahoe Road and South Peoria Street.

Its move away from its previous spot in Littleton — near South Broadway and Mineral Avenue — was largely based on where its members were clustered.

“Most members' offices were located in the 80111 ZIP code,” said Hankins, referring to the central Centennial and Denver Tech Center areas.

For those who aren't familiar with the association, here are Hankins' answers about what SMDRA does and what brought the group to call Centennial home. The new headquarters is located at 6436 S. Racine Circle.

What difference does SMDRA make for Realtors and the local economy?

For Realtor members: Education on market trends, marketing, contracts, ethics and professional standards just to name a few. Realtors advocate for homeownership and (legislation) that is beneficial to homeownership and home affordability issues. (We provide) support within their business and on how they can be better business owners. (We also offer) community outreach through charitable giving and volunteer days within the community.

Our Realtors are knowledgeable on changes in the marketplace and those effects on the local economy. Changes in politics can change the local economy, and our Realtors are educated (on) those changes. Realtors typically know about new commerce coming to the state and the local area, which can affect the economy.

Why pick Centennial rather than other south metro cities?

Geography, building space for over 4,000 members with enough parking for members and our building tenants, easy access to major highways and local businesses close to the building.

Did Centennial's economy factor into the choice?

Not really. However, being located in a strong economic community is beneficial to our association long-term.

What trends are Realtors noticing in the south metro housing market lately?

Consistently steady market; inventory is low.

What's on the horizon for SMDRA?

• Extended push for Realtors for use of Sentrilock lockboxes exclusively in our market.

• Continued charitable and community involvement.

• Education to our members regarding diversity in the marketplace and how to continue being a valued adviser in one of the most important transactions a consumer has in their life.

• Continued education about the difference between being a Realtor and a real estate agent to both our members and the community.
