An afternoon grass fire at C-470 and University Boulevard in Highlands Ranch is being blamed on a carelessly discarded cigarette, according to Littleton Fire Rescue Division Chief Doug Ireland.

Two brush trucks, one engine and 11 firefighters from Littleton Fire Rescue were dispatched at 12:46 p.m. June 11 to the blaze that scorched about an acre located on the south side of C-470.

Ireland said the fire was quickly contained and declared out at 1:41 p.m.

A CDOT electrical box was damaged in the fire.
