The Denver Concert Band presents “Beasts of Legends & Lore” at its February 24 concert, featuring local legends Art Bouton and Dave Hanson, as well as anime favorite “Spirited Away.” Bouton and Hanson will play soprano sax and piano, respectively, on “Ghost Train,” composed to create the illusion of a supernatural train roaring across the plains. Compositional techniques include bending pitch to mimic train whistles, and layering instrumentation to suggest movement. The DCB will also play “Spirited Away,” from the eponymous Academy Award-winning anime feature film. DCB Music Director Jacinda Bouton says, “This anime’s score dances along a musical spectrum, from exciting battles to emotional soaring melodies that transport the listener right to the heart of this classic coming-of-age story.”
Guest artists Art Bouton and Dave Hanson will contribute jazz improvisation to “Ghost Train.” Mr. Bouton is First-Call woodwind performer who regularly performs at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, with the Colorado Symphony, Colorado Ballet and Opera Colorado. He is founder and Director of the Colorado Jazz Repertory Orchestra, and a professor at DU’s Lamont School of Music. Hanson is a jazz performer, composer and arranger whose orchestral arrangements have been performed by the Boston Pops and symphony orchestras throughout the United States and the Ukraine. He also composes for radio and television, and is an adjunct professor of jazz at DU’s Lamont School of Music.
Hanson says, “The experience of playing "Ghost Train" is beautiful for me because it's a balancing act between very specific written parts to be played as a member of the ensemble (and this is not simple music!), and the wonderful freedom that is allowed Art and me to improvise, although within certain limitations. It's a musical challenge, but exhilarating!” Mr. Bouton adds, “Ghost Train is an exciting and challenging work for both the saxophone and piano, and it is an additional thrill to improvise with Dave along with the DCB!”
The Denver Concert Band will perform “Beasts of Legends & Lore” on Sunday, February 24th at 2:00 p.m. at the Lone Tree Arts Center, 10075 Commons St, Lone Tree. For tickets, go to www.LoneTreeArtsCenter.org.
