Fair offers 'awesome' time

Stephanie Smith leaned over a duck pool at the Douglas County Fair & Rodeo on Aug. 2, helping her children, Logan, Patrick and Lillian, play carnival games. Around them were bustling crowds standing in line at the carnival rides, grabbing a turkey leg, watching live music or browsing livestock barns.

“This is our first year living in Castle Rock, so this our first time,” she said of attending the fair. “It's awesome. We're having so much fun.”

Across the fairgrounds in the poultry barn were Judy Lowery and Dale Mikelson. The two friends went to high school together at Douglas County High School and had recently reconnected, years after their children had grown and finished their own time in 4-H.
“I've been here most every year of my life,” said Mikelson, a former fair board member.

Whether people were attending for the first time or closing another year in a long-standing tradition of coming to the fair, the annual event brought the community out for fun-packed events. Running from Aug. 1-4, the event boasted a carnival, rodeo events, a concert with country music star Gary Allan and the 60th anniversary of the Douglas County Jr. Livestock Sale.
