Four Valor wrestlers qualify for state

Four Valor Christian athletes will travel downtown this week to represent their school in the Class 4A state wrestling tournament at the Pepsi Center.

The Eagles finished fourth in the team standings and had two wrestlers, Cody Weltzel (130) and Torey Welch (145), finish second in their weight classes. They will be joined by two teammates, Chaz Poison (140) and Wil Robinson (152), who each battled back from a loss, moved into the consolation bracket and took third place, which qualified them for state.

Now, the action moves to the Pepsi Center, where, for state, wrestlers are seeded according to finish at regionals in the first round of competition, which begins Feb. 17.

Action resumes Feb. 18 with the championship quarterfinals. It is a double-elimination tournament. A first-round loss puts the wrestler in the consolation bracket and the first round of consolation matches will be held after the championship quarterfinals and the second round of consolation matches will begin at 7 p.m.

The third round and consolation semifinals begin at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 19. Fifth-place matches will start at 3 p.m. with third-place matches to follow. The championships in all four classification will begin at 6:30 p.m.
