Rush to judgment. You can see it just about everywhere these days, especially in this age of technology where information can flow so rapidly. We are quick to come to a hastened conclusion.
And then to another. And on and on it goes.
A step back and a deep breath can do wonders.
That’s what’s required of us… in our interpersonal relationships, in our business dealings and as a civil society. Being a school district of our size — educating 68,000 students spread across 850 square miles — and being the largest employer in Douglas County, comeswith challenges and great responsibility. In order to properly and fairly serve our students, staff and community, the guidance of district policy and law is critical.
This is precisely why the Douglas County School District does not publicly discuss issues such as personnel matters — this is common practice among school districts and employers across the United States. In the case of a complaint against a DCSDemployee, our policies and practices allow time to conduct a thorough review to uncover the facts, bring to light the whole story and proceed in a disciplined and dispassionate fashion. This affords the accused an opportunity to present his or her case in a fair and professional manner.
And that’s where we find ourselves today.
Most assuredly, matters involving accusations of wrongdoing are rarely simple. Timelines don’t seem to satisfy the public’s appetite for information. Silence during the investigation seems an antithesis to transparency. And, it’s human nature to try to fill in the blanks.
Rest assured, we are doing our due diligence. I ask our community to give us an opportunity and sufficient time to do our job responsibly and proceed in the best interest of the students of Douglas County. I also ask our community to withhold the rush to judgment.
There’s been enough of that already. Let’s remember our unity of purpose – the 68,000 children of this great community.
