Tri-County Health Department warns about use of unapproved medications

Improper use of chloroquine phosphate can lead to serious complications, death

The Tri-County Health Department has issued a statement that warns residents not to use chloroquine phosphate, or anything a health care provider does not prescribe, as a COVID-19 remedy.

It could kill you.

In the statement, the department says not to ingest aquarium products or any other chemicals that contain chloroquine phosphate. These chemicals are not intended for human consumption and can lead to serious health consequences, including death.

Medications such as chloroquine phosphate and hydroxychloroquine sulfate should be taken only when prescribed by and under the supervision of your health care provider and always according to the instructions provided, the statement says.

Those who have taken chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine and are experiencing any unexpected symptoms should contact their health care provider or call the poison center at 1-800-222-1222.
