Jags hope to regain championship form

Jaguars girls golf may have lost key players from last season, but a couple of high-profile players remain and upcoming golfers look to fill the void.

Last season, Rock Canyon High School girls golf finished the season with the Continental League championship and a second-place finish in the Class 4A state championship tournament.

Under the coaching of Dave Vahling, in his ninth year, the Jaguars return two key players in junior Allie Johnston and senior Carlie McAlister.

Johnston was the state’s runner-up in 4A last season. She is also a member of the Jaguars’ 4A championship team in 2009.

McAlister was also on the 2009 4A title-winning team and its state runner-up team last season.

Although two key players graduated last season, hope of replacing them comes to the varsity lineup, Vahling said.

“We hope that our underclassmen from last year’s championship junior-varsity team can fill that void,” Vahling said.

Two Jags golfers expected to make an impact are Michelle Romano and Ashley Park, the coach said.

This season, Rock Canyon, Regis and Highlands Ranch should be the front-runners for the Continental title, Vahling said.

“The rest of the league will be close behind,” he said.

Like all Rock Canyon sports this season, except for football, this will be the first season Jags girls golf will compete in a Class 5A post-season.
