Letter to the editor: Beware of same wine, different bottle

How does the richest county in Colorado, and America’s sixth richest, pay its teachers 20-25% less on average than neighboring school districts in Littleton and Cherry Creek?

And before one claims that teacher salaries have no correlation with the quality of education, why has the DCSD consistently failed to make the top ten list of school districts in Colorado by any rating agency of which I am aware over the past decade when the school districts for Littleton, Cherry Creek, Boulder, Cheyenne Mountain and Poudre consistently rank in the top ten?

Seventeen years ago when we moved to Douglas County the schools were a big draw. With no school-age children since 2012, our family has not paid close attention to the schools. That was a huge mistake.

Quality of public education is a primary driver for quality of life and economic development. Young educated families often consider that their number one consideration. Yet the DCSD has been miserably failing Douglas County’s children and citizens for the past decade.

And the blame lies squarely with the “reformers” who experimented on the district’s children for several years. The current board, as your recent article points out (“District takes first steps in overhaul of educator pay,” July 22), is making yeoman efforts to address the pay issue and repair the damage inflicted by the reformers. But voters should keep that in mind when board elections roll around so that they are not sold the same old wine of the reformers in a shiny new bottle.
