Letter to the editor: Student values Leung’s leadership on Douglas County school board

I am a junior at Mountain Vista High School. Although the pandemic has brought immense hardships upon the community, I acknowledge that it has greatly fortified my passion for local politics. As my education faced continuous uncertainty, I became increasingly aware of the DCSD School Board. Despite the circumstances of the pandemic, Kevin Leung has been instrumental in preserving DCSD’s strong standards of education, and this is why I choose to endorse him for the upcoming school board election.

Kevin has the knowledge and experience as a current school board member that qualifies him to continue to serve. As a student and former Student Advisory Group member, I greatly value Kevin’s consistent willingness to listen to the needs of young people in the community. In fact, many student representative boards such as SAG were created under his leadership. Mr. Leung has an acute understanding of the value of his youngest and most important constituents.

Furthermore, Kevin is an active community member and has continually demonstrated his passion for improving educational standards, serving on numerous committees such as the State Advisory Council for Parent Involvement in Education and DCSD’s School Accountability Committees.

Although I can’t yet vote, I understand the gravity of having trusted leadership that protects and improves the education of all DCSD students. In November, I hope to see school board members that make choices with the welfare of the community in mind, and I firmly believe that Kevin Leung shares these values.
