Letter to the editor: Be part of solution for schools

Be part of solution for schools

As former school board directors for the Douglas County School District, we are appealing to the community for cooler heads to prevail.

We are all dealing with a global pandemic, and doing the best we possibly can in an impossible situation. This is a time for unity, rather than division. Our school board has the massive responsibility of keeping students and employees safe, even at the expense of not keeping everyone happy. We must ask ourselves how can we support these trusted servants in their decision making, and not create more chaos.

No other large metro area school district has opened secondary schools to full in-person learning because of the spacing needed to follow social distancing rules. During a time when we ought to be demonstrating civility and understanding, we should not rip our community apart with the financial and emotional toll of a recall.

Let’s take it upon ourselves as members of this diverse community to listen to one another, pay attention to those around us, extend grace, and help fill the gaps.

Join us in supporting the Douglas County Board of Education by becoming part of the solution rather than the problem. Together we are stronger.
