I've had my company for four years. It's Bud's Home Team, and I have my license with Keller Williams Executive Realty in Highlands Ranch. I'm married to my wife, Kathy, and I have a stepdaughter named Olivia who is a freshman at Rock Canyon High School. When I got into real estate, I wanted to be different. I thought that I would build my brand around giving back. The way I accomplish that is I donate 10 percent of my income to charities that have impacted the lives of my clients. One thing I learned in real estate is it's not about me. For my business, if I truly believe it's not about me, then at closing it should be about a charity that has impacted the life of my client.
I've lived in Colorado for 26 years. I live in Lone Tree. I'm a skier and a runner. I've done eight marathons and I've loved living in Colorado, especially in Douglas County.
What is your inspiration?
I've always been a frustrated entrepreneur. I've always had these big ideas without the guts to act on it. My vision was to use my business as a force for good. There's more than just buying big houses and making a lot of money and driving fancy cars. There's nothing wrong with that. I want a business where I earn a living and I give back to the community. I've said this to other people: I will measure my success in real estate by how much I can donate to charity.
It's very, very rewarding. I'm in the day-in, day-out trenches of real estate. What's most rewarding to me is to teach my stepdaughter, Olivia, that you can have a business, but you can give back with your business. There's a social conscience to my company that I'm very, very proud of.
What advice would you give to a young entrepreneur?
Find something you're passionate about, then find a way to earn a living but also be able to give back. There's an expression I live by. There's a book called “Start With Why” by Simon Sinek. The whole premise of the book is two sentences: “People don't buy what you do. They buy why you do it.”
Do something that you love and find a way with your company to give back to somebody. It's more than just profits. Find a way to make a difference in your community with your business.
