What makes you the best choice for this office?
HD39 is ready for a representative that is truly willing to work across party lines. The incumbent has rooted himself comfortably in working more for his party than the district. I am ready to listen to the will of the people in the district and truly act as a representative of the people. Further, I believe there is a need for change in our government to avoid corruption and injustice. HD39 has been in a party-politics stranglehold (by the Republican Party), which in many ways has affected its advancement in areas like innovation, infrastructure improvements, and the like.
If you're elected, what single issue will be at the top of your agenda?
Given the reality of COVID-19, we are going to need to work toward securing a post-COVID economy based in reality, science and safety, not miracle cures and denial. This will result in improvement in critical infrastructure like communication resources (internet and cellular technology) within the district. A significant portion of HD39 lacks broadband or reliable cellular access. Further, we need to meet the needs of the small businesses within the district to ensure they not only survive COVID, but can thrive in the aftermath.
If you're elected, what must you accomplish in order for you to consider your term a success?
A successful term will be an increase in the passage of bipartisan legislation and the advancement of the district, and the state, based in cooperation amongst our government leaders. Further, a successful term will be one where I can be on the ground and in the district meeting with the people and advancing their concerns at the legislative level. I do not want my constituents to not have access to me or feel like I am hiding on the hill.
What do you see as the most important role of a member of the Colorado House of Representatives?
The most important role of the member of the Colorado House of Representatives is to do your absolute best to represent all of your constituents, and not show loyalty only to your base or those that share your beliefs. The job of a representative is to represent the will of the people.
What new challenges brought about by COVID-19 do you see affecting the state in the coming years and how will you help address them?
The economic landscape has shifted dramatically and the legislature will need to catch up. Less talked about:, the legislature must also address health disparities created by COVID-19's long-term effects. We are only just starting to scratch the surface of what COVID-19 does to the body; we do not know what the long-term health effects will be. COVID-19 is likely to become a pre-existing condition, and nobody should be denied health care due to infection. As a healthcare professional, I am committed to improving access to health care, protecting pre-existing condition coverages, and expanding them to include COVID-19 where necessary.
