The Castle Rock News Press caught up with Brian Erickson, who recently took over as the head golf professional at the Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course in Castle Rock.

What brings you to Red Hawk?

After I was working as the director of golf of Perry Park Country Club for 10 years, I thought it was a good time for change. Working at Red Hawk is a great opportunity. I have worked in the industry for about 18 years. In my home state of Minnesota, I became a PGA professional, and I worked at a resort course near Brainerd Lakes.

What have you gained from your
experience working with different courses?

It is really different when you manage a resort course. You see different guests. It was really a fun variety to work that position. The course, (Cragun’s Legacy Course), had a five-star rating in “Golf Digest.”

At Perry Park, we had 200 regular members. You mostly get to know all of them over 20 years.

At Red Hawk, you are getting a true community feel at a more public course.

How did you get into the profession?

I guess I started playing when I was around 11. It was a sport I was good at. I went to school for professional golf management. When I got out of college, I went to Perry Park.

What has it been like managing golf courses during COVID?

It has been amazing to see the effect COVID has had on the game of golf. We have sold record rounds at Red Hawk. When some courses in the area closed altogether, we kept going. With restrictions on everything else, we were able to offer something safe.

We had some players who had never played before. We had entire families coming in and taking up the game because it was something they could play.

It has really been tremendous for the sport.

Do you think the interest in golf will continue?

Only time will tell over the next year as people get back to normal, or what normal is now. Hopefully, we hooked some of these new players.

What makes the Red Hawk course unique/great?

Red Hawk is all about the spectacular views, the deck wraps all the way around the club house and there is nothing better than the views around the 18th hole.

Will you be making any changes?

The course is already running really well. I will just work to continue to provide a great experience for golfers, keep up the grounds and do whatever I can to keep making this a great place.
