Recycling event in Highlands Ranch

Rotary Club working for donations, community

The Rotary Club of Highlands Ranch is sponsoring a communitywide recycling event on May 8. The special event will be at Highlands Ranch Hospital at 1500 Park Central Drive between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Marty Genereux said the Rotary Club has revived the recycling program that used to be hosted by the Highlands Ranch Community Association.

Genereux said the Rotary took on the event for two reasons. First, he said, community recycling programs address environmental issues both locally and around the world.

Second, Genereux said with all of the COVID restrictions in 2020, residents had few options for recycling, leading to a bigger demand this year.

“Moreover, our club was unable to participate in our normal fundraising projects — thus depleting our coffers,” Genereux said. “This event will be free, and donations are encouraged. All proceeds will go to the many charitable organizations we support.”

At the May 8 event, Genereux said residents can bring old electronics and paint at no charge. However, there is a need for donations to continue supporting programs hosted by the local Rotary Club, including:

Rotary International: Eradicating polio worldwide and supporting the environment

Integrated Family Community Services (IFCS) and Metro Caring: Denver metro food banks

Hide in Plain Sight: Helping homeless high school age teens in Douglas County find a home and graduate

Free the Girls: An organization dedicated to eliminating sex trafficking

Warrior Bonfire Program: Supporting military Purple Heart recipients and their families

Genereux said the 2021 event will also be unique with expectations for between 80 and 100 volunteers, including members of local Boys and Girls Scouts, Thunder Ridge High School students, Citizens Academy participants from the South Metro Fire Department and police presence.

The event will also feature swag bags and live music.
