Sushi fanatics looking for a next-level experience might be surprised that one of the hippest new spots isn't in LoDo or RiNo, but a quiet strip mall in Littleton.
Makizushico opened in December at the southeast corner of Bowles Avenue and Platte Canyon Road, in the spot formerly occupied by My Favorite Muffin.
Co-owner Shurong He said the idea is to blend a high-end sushi spot with the family-friendly atmosphere of the suburbs.
“Everything we serve is special ordered,” He said. “We're talking flown in every other day from Japan. The fish from the grocery store doesn't cut it here.”
Diners won't find Americanized standbys like Philadelphia rolls, He said. Makizushico specializes in omakase dinners, meaning a chef selects and specially prepares the day's best fish, served to diners in a specific order in upward of a dozen courses.
“It's a slower, paced-out experience,” said manager Will Tsui. “Our chef and servers go over the Japanese names of everything you're eating, and explain why and how they chose it. It's a very sensory dinner.”
It's also one for special occasions — omakase dinners come in three tiers, starting at $80 and ranging up to $200.
Makizushico also specializes in Japanese tapas, or small-plate appetizers meant to be shared. Many are prepared with Colorado-grown microgreens, Tsui said, and some are so delicate they're prepared with tweezers.
In place of standard cut sushi rolls, Tsui said, Makizushico serves temaki rolls made with nori so fresh that it must be served within seconds of preparation, lest the seaweed start going soggy.
Makizushico isn't the first swanky joint tucked away in the south Littleton neighborhood — Social Bar & Lounge, an upscale cocktail bar, opened north across Bowles over the summer.
