When it comes to Class 4A boys preps golf, Valor Christian has
done it again.
Valor Christian High School’s boys golf team won its second
consecutive state championship at the 4A level Oct. 5 at The Club
at Flying Horse in Colorado Springs.
The defending 2009 champions, the Eagles took the second title
with a score of 433, 15 strokes ahead of Cortez and D’Evelyn, which
tied for runner up with 448.
D’Evelyn’s John Ahern took the 4A title having shot 137 after a
7-under par finish. Valor’s Wyndham Clark came in one-stroke behind
the top position to be the state’s 4A runner up with 138. He shot a
67 in the first round and 72 in the second to finish 6-under par.
Clark shot six birdies in the first round, including the par-3 hole
No. 2. He had four birdies in Round 2.
Another help to the Eagles’ title defense was Spencer Sheets.
Sheets swung a 71 in both rounds of the tournament to finish with a
2-under 142. He finished in fourth place overall. Sheets also put
up a birdie on the No. 2 hole in both the first and second round.
He had three birdies in the first round, four in the second.
Andy Meyers was third in for Valor Christian. He shot a 154 to
finished tied at 25. He had a 6-over 78 in the first round where he
drilled a birdie on the No. 14 hole. He had a better outing in the
second round where he was four over, having shot three birdies but
double bogeyed two other holes.
Blake Patterson shot a 156, 12-over, to tie at 32. He shot three
birdies and three double-bogeys in the first round for a 77. He
drilled three birdies and two double-bogeys in Round 2 for a
79.
